It was joy to the eyes to see our wonderful visitors, Professor Grimes and her students from Elmhurst College (Illinois, U.S.A.) blend into the culture and activities of the club. Our stage band Tension Invasion Band performed for them, and they performed for us. All the pieces they performed were breathtaking.
We also had one of the most fun parts of the night The Dinner. We all sat and ate and enjoyed ourselves.

By F. Gifford
"Off with a bang!" One step better so far. The club football team has now earned the right to be called 'The Champion of St. James Division 1 knockout competition' for the season 2009-2010.

With Easton Jersey Adams at the head of the team as coach early preparations and hard work paid off for the club. It all started in October with a few warm up games against teams that were playing in bigger leagues as far as premier league. the first match of the competition was against a newly promoted side to our league dubbed Upsetters which the team brushed aside Two nil both goals coming from Rushawn Wolery and got buy to play a semifinal against Defenders whom were put out of their miseries thanks to a goal from the captain Kalusha Coates that send us to the finals.

The finals was only a couple days later and the team was provided with a lot of boost both physically and emotionally as the club had participated in the JCDC National Band Competition and won everything they were eligible for and then just two days before the finals a past goal keeper/old boy Vincent Rowe showed up for training with his gloves and words of encouragement.

the finals was a hard fought game but the club wanted it more and in the 30th minute the deadlock was broken when Fabian Gifford headed home a cross and which proved to be the decider. We the members of the team wish to say thanks to all who have contributed financially and in their thoughts and promise that it can only get better.

December 19, 2009
The biggest event, and the last event of the year, Christmas Dinner & Prize Giving Night took place on Saturday evening December 19th. The main sponsors of the event, Trevor Willo Wilson and Keith Young were back in Jamaica to organize the evening and so as many other familiar faces. We were once again welcomed by the rain which forced us to celebrate inside the club. But with good food, good music, and many prize givings, the night was wonderful and everybody enjoyed the last event of the 2009.

Brandon Daley received under 12 Boy of the year 2009, Shanique Malcolm received Teen Girl of the Year 2009, and Ricardo Heath received Teen Boy of the Year 2009. Unfortunately there was no candidate for under 12 Girl of the Year 2009.

October 30, 2009
Our friends from Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligan (B.A.T.H.) were once again back to Jamaica for a week. This was their third time to visit Jamaica, and our members always enjoy having them.
It was January 2009 when our members were invited to Durham, UK as part of their project "Jamaic-a-Difference". There, we introduced some 'Jamaican Dance'.
This time B.A.T.H. boys, Tyler and Liam, showed us wonderful dance which all of our club members took part to learn how to do their dance.
Our relationship is getting stronger, and we can not wait for their next visit in July 2010.

Visitors from Trinity Church, Moss Side, Manchester England...

February 24, 2009
A group of 4 church members, Alistair, Gabrielle, Beryl and Carol from Trinity Community Church, Moss Side, Manchester, England visited the club. Many of their church members went over to Manchester from Jamaica in the 1950-60s and have strong links with Jamaica. Their church established the Hideaway Youth Project in Moss Side over 40 years ago and is currently working to improve relations between African Caribbean and Somali young men in Moss Side mainly through sporting activities. They also have a thriving girls club. They are working hard to provide positive alternatives to some of the gang culture that exists in Moss Side.

Alistair said: We had heard of MBBGC activity through the web site but were quite unprepared for the quality of the music and the skill of the marching. We will never ever forget our evening with you and the willingness of all the young people to talk with us. As a youth worker for many years in England, I felt very much at home...

Their visit didnt end there. When they got back to Manchester, they talked with the congregation at Trinity Church about their visit. Everyone agreed it would be a good idea to organise a collection for the work of our Club and made a donation of 300.00

The club would like to say thank you and may your days be filled with perpetual blessings.
Hope to see you back in Jamaica soon!

surprise Birthday...

click to watch video

February 12, 2009
On February 12th, Mr. Earle celebrated his 70th birthday. We (members of the club) wanted to make it special so we planned and executed a surprise birthday party.
On the night, we lured Mr. Earle to the band stand to resolve an issue with a class I was teaching while the club house was rearranged to set up a table complete with a cake for the celebrated man of the hour. After the issue was "taken care of", he returned to the club house where it was dark. When he asked what was wrong with the lights, he was greeted by a chorus of happy birthday sung by all the members of the club followed by the musical stylings of David 'Sleepy' Cunningham and Patrick 'Abba' Clarke.
It was good to see Mr. Earle so genuinely surprised that he even shed a few tears (of joy for sure).
May your days be long and fruitful, and may you live to see and enjoy many more birthdays Mr. Earle. Salud!!!

A donation of CA$2,000 was received from O'Donnell Family, (family of Mr. Ratimir 'PAPA' Pavlovic) to help equip the computer room with more computers.
The students are used to "share" computers at class. But these additional computers will definitely increase time for each individuals to use computers.

Thanks so much to the O'Donnell Family!!! Your generous support means a lot to us...

Cultural Exchange Trip to England...

January 17-27, 2009

5 representatives from the club and 3 members from Flankers Peace & Justice Centre visited UK as guests of Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans (BATH) in Durham from January 17-27, 2009.
Andre Mowatt, Renece Smith, Glenroy Williams, and Collin Farquharson lead by Ms. Kumiko Terai (Peace Boat volunteer) were the five lucky ones from Montego Bay Boys & Girls Club to gain so many precious experiences while they were in UK.
Every morning started at King James I Community Art College where all the Jamaicans went to different form classes to answer questions about Jamaica.
Prior to this trip, our members practiced Jamaican dance which they performed numerous times to the students of King James I Community Art College, as well as to the students of Framwellgate Moor Primary and Cockton Hill Primary.
The main event of this trip must have been the Launch of the "Jamaic-A-Difference" where B.A.T.H. showcased their works and documentary videos that were filmed during their visit to Jamaica in July and October 2008. Andre Mowatt represented the Jamaican group and delivered a speech on the impact this whole experience has had on him.
High Commissioner to UK, Mr. Burchell Whiteman also visited the exhibition the following day. Our members were thrilled to have met him and were honoured to get advises from him which inspired them in many ways.
This cultural exchange trip included visit to Durham County Cricket Club, Darlington Football Club, Durham Town Hall, Durham Cathedral, and a lot of unique activities that we are not familiar with in Jamaica such as bowling, trampoline, and Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social dance originating in Ireland and Scotland). .

The club would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Stephen Elliott (founder of B.A.T.H.) and all the B.A.T.H. members who worked so hard to raise funds to bring our members to UK, and to Mr. A.S. Rodchester (Head Teacher of King James I Community Arts College), all the students and staff at King James I Community Arts College, and all the host families for giving the members warm welcome. We hope our relationship will grow and continue making differences to the lives of many Jamaicans.

Football Team Report ...

February 20, 2009
For the past three years the clubs football program has been in misery due to senior players and three coaches calling it a day due to work schedule and migration. The team however is now performing and the expectations are high. In this 08-09 season the coach Easton (Jersey) Adams has returned with a plan to uplift the standard of football in the club. Since his arrival back the team took part in the St. James D1 knock-out competition where they went to the finals and lost one nil. The regular season is now in session and the club has played five (5) matches with three wins one draw and a lost.

We the players, coaching staff and directors of the club would like to say thanks to the past members who resides in Canada that donated a full set of gears (boots, socks jerseys, balls etc) A.D, Rowe, Marcia, Robin, Cordell, Proffessor, Bowen, Dark-man, if anyone was left out we apologize.

To all past club members home and abroad we are kindly asking for your support no matter what it is.

Peace Boat & Sunholiday Joint Project completed ...

December 30, 2008
It was back in July 2005 when Peace Boat and Sunholiday Travel & Tours Ltd. got together and formed a Joint Project to help our club. Their mission was to 1) Establish ADSL internet connection, 2) Create website for the club, 3) Extend the main building to setup computer rooms for IT education.
Yes, they have kept their promise and mission accomplished.

"It was a long rough road." says Ms. Kumiko, Peace Boat volunteer. "But it was worth the effort. I would like to thank all the club members who supported this project. And also my respect to Pop and Mr. Earle who have always been there 100% supporting this project."

The project made possible for many club members to learn computer skills, and study in a much better environment.
On behalf of the club, we would like to thank Peace Boat and Sunholiday Travel & Tours Ltd. for their contribution to the club.

Christmas Dinner 2008 ...

December 19, 2008
Christmas Dinner and Prize Giving Ceremony was held on Friday December 19th at the club.
Despite of the bad weather which forced us to change the venue to inside of the club, the whole evening was well put together and everybody enjoyed the night.
We had a special guest, our late great leader Pop's wife was present and added warmth to the event. She was also the presenter for the grand finale winners. Club members who received trophies (sponsored by Trevor 'Willo' Wilson and Keith Young) were all excited and proud.

Another year has ended. The club is still standing strong and we wish 2009 will be another happy and prosperous year for all the clubbites and families.

Dream to become the fastest man in the world ...

December 19, 2008
"Japanese Relay" is one of the favourite games club members play. And if you have eyes of a sprinter scout, you must have spotted one individual. His name is Merrick Kilbourne who has just graduated from Irwin High School . He got a chance to do a test run and Mr. Michael Ollivierre, coach from IT-DAT Track and Field Academy was thrilled by Merrick's run and was accepted right away to get a training at his club.

"I was nervous first. But through the training I have gained more confidence." Says Merrick who has shortened his 100m time from 10.90 sec to 10.39 sec in 3 months. He was also excited to have received MVP, and Most Disciplined athlete of IT-DAT Track and Field Academy for 2008. When he was asked for his new year's resolution, he answered "To become the fastest man in the world."

It must be a lonely journey to work towards his dream, especially away from his family. But the club wishes him the best and hope one day we will be proud to have 'the fastest man in the world' from our club.

Harrison House won. But due to the protests from other houses for judging procedure, trophy and cake were presented to Harrison House the following day.

Cayman 2008 ...

August 8-18, 2008
Cayman 2008 was a very thrilling experience as it was the first time going overseas for all of the members; it was also a very successful trip as we accomplished all that we had set out to do.
The trip was planned to accompany forty-five band members and five senior/past members as chaperones, however some of the band members did not receive their passport in time and sadly had to miss the trip. The trip was for ten days from August 8-18.

During our visit we attended seven churches in which we played before or after and during the service. On the 13th the band performed in front of the Cayman port where there were 4 cruise ships docked, the band performing caught most if not all of the tourists eyes and ears they all came and listened to our melodious music and our precise steps, Afterwards the band marched around Georges Town where we stopped and performed at a monumental fountain.
The following Saturday the band played a football match against a team mainly build up of players aging from 19-29 yrs. The club won the game 3 goals to 1 thanks to goals from Nikoy Wallace (Trumpet) with the equalizer, Sheldon Lyle (Drummer) with leader and Fabian Gifford (Drum Major) with the icing.

The band was the main event wherever we went and the Caymanians loved us.
We the members of the marching Band would like to say thanks to the club in general and to all who helped to acquire funds for funding this trip.

A youth drama group based in the North East of England at King James I Community Arts College, Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans (B.A.T.H.) visited the club on Monday July 14th.
The group was in Jamaica for one week, and each of the young people had their own specific focus during their stay that will feed into an overall story to produce a main documentary video. This documentary will be used in schools, colleges and agencies around the UK to look at cultural differences and expectations.

Some of our members have been in touch with the group since beginning of the year by emails, so it was very nice to finally meet them in person.
The BATH group will launch the video at an exhibition next year and some members from the club are invited to attend the exhibition which will be held in Durham, England.

New locker for the club ...

April 29, 2008
If you visited the club last year, you must have seen those wooden lockers with the doors wide open.
Why open? ... Because termites have eaten all the goodies in the wood and made it impossible to fix the door hinge for it to hold the door closed.
But with the help of Tank-Weld Metals, the club has a strong, long-lasting locker now!

Thanks to our sponsor Tank-Weld Metals for providing all the materials for the new locker.
Steel work was done by "Second" assisted by clubbites.
With club's signature colour, black & white with checker design, our new steel-metal locker is looking strong, and will be used for decades to come.

After all these years, the children can identify themselves as a member of the Montego Bay Boys & Girls Club. There were times when the club members were stopped by the police on their way home, and questioned what they were doing on the road late at night. Now they have something to prove who they are.

Great job to computer class students who have designed and made those IDs. They really are looking great!

IDs also available for senior Members of Montego Bay Boys & Girls Club.

The Marching Band Needs Your Support ...

April 5, 2008
The club is planning a trip to The Cayman Islands in August and we need sponsorship!

Our aim is to raise enough money for 35 current members to go on this trip which is approximately total amount of J$875,000 (@J$25,000 x 35 members). We have raised J$9,000 so far from "Grand Fish Fry", and are scheduled to have more fund-raising events such as "March-a-thon", and "Labour Day Fun Day & Concert".

The Marching Band used to travel abroad in the 70's and '80s and for those old boys and girls who traveled during that time know how much difference those trips made in their lives.
This trip will inspire this generation of clubbites and will enlighten their lives by giving exposure to a different environment and experiences.
The club would like to give them this trip as an incentive for their hard work, since they are the main source for the club to carry on.

We do appreciate any support possible. We accept almost any kind of payment including online payment.
Just give us a call or send us an email for any further inquiries you may have.

Easter Trip 2008...

March 24, 2008
Yes, it's Easter! And "Easter Trip", the long standing tradition still goes on!
The club members went to The Dunn's River Falls on Easter Monday and had a great time soaking themselves in a pure cold water.

Back in the 70s, the club members usually spent the day at the Puerto Seco Beach as this beach was the hip spot in those days on an Easter Day. But after a long spell, members decided that it was time for a change. In 1998 another location was drafted and the new destination was "The Dunns River Falls".

National Marching Band Competition ...

Nov 10, 2007
National Marching Band Competition was held at Buckfield Playing Ground in Ocho Rios.
It was a part of Youth Month 2007 organized by Ministry of Information Culture Youth & Sports, in an effort to promote diversity and alternative methods of engaging young people in positive activities.

Our marching band gave an excellent performance on the 1st round. The performance was very solid and tight, with energy, high skills and creativity. The crowd responded the most and there was no doubt that our marching band was the best on the 1st round performance.

On the Semi-Final round, although not as responsive as the 1st round, our marching band performed well with some creativity. However, the way the performance ended raised some judges eyebrows.

Instrument is a part of you. You must handle it with love and care.

These are the words instructors (who happened to be the judges for the competition) were emphasizing at the workshops which took place earlier that day, on how we should care our instruments.
Unfortunately, throwing away the drum sticks on the ground as a part of the performance was not a good idea after all.
Well lesson learned!! We all believe that our marching band will deliver a great performance next year!!!

As for the result, Tivoli Garden Marching Band from Kingston won the competition whose performance was full of energy and creativity throughout the whole competition. 2nd place was Rising Star Marching Band from St. Thomas, and Farm Heights Marching Band from Montego Bay placed 3rd.

National Hero's Day, October 15 2007
Twelve Jamaicans who have contributed to sport, its development and administration in the country, were among the almost 200 persons who received National Honours and Awards from Governor General Professor Kenneth Hall at the annual Heroes' Day ceremony held at the National Indoor Sports Centre.

Leading the group was world-renowned cricket umpire Steve Bucknor, who is on the International Cricket Council's (ICC) panel of elite umpires and stood in a record fifth ICC Cricket World Cup final in April. Bucknor received the Order of Jamaica, the fourth highest order for outstanding service in the field of sports. The 61-year-old was a FIFA football referee for nearly 20 years before turning to cricket in 1992.
"It is good to be recognised by a country in the work that I do and whether or not I deserve it, the recognition is always good and it's exciting and I'm very, very happy," Bucknor told the Observer shortly after yesterday's function which was shifted from its usual venue at King's House because of heavy rains which have affected the island recently.

PEACE BOAT visits the club ...

August 15, 2007
Yes, they are back again! Our Japanese friends "PEACE BOAT" docked at Montego Bay Freeport on Wednesday August 15th with almost 1,000 Passengers. A group of about 40 Japanese, and some people who are from Global Kids Program (U.S.A.) visited the club.
Club children started off by introducing Club's famous "Japanese Relay" and "Dog & Bone". And then Peace Boat introduced their Japanese culture such as Kimono, which girls enjoyed very much, and some craft.
The Highlight of their visit was to do some painting on the walls of ongoing Joint Project "Computer Room". First plan was to do 2 small walls, but the children got so creative that they ended up drawing quite a wide space of walls.
It is always a great experience for all the children, and we look forward for their visit again in the near future.

Harrison House wins 1st "Annual POP Quiz Competition"...

August 2, 2007
1st Annual "POP QUIZ COMPETITION" was held on the night before club's 65th birthday, and also the night before the birthday of our late leader Gladston "POP" Lawrence.

It all started from Mr. Earle's wish.
"All the past directors have their names on the Houses, and the names will be passed on. So I want something, like an annual competition that carries POP's name, so his name will be passed on to many generations to come." We contacted the family of "PAPA" Pavlovic, the most influential director in POP's club life, for the event's sponsorship.
The response was so quick, the answer was...
"Yes! We will be more than happy to sponsor the annual event."

Some Houses studied very hard, and some Houses could have studied more (smile)...
Harrison House had the most enthusiastic members who lead them to be the first winner of the newest annual event. They received a big trophy and a delicious cake which was presented by POP's son. Second place was Jones House, who also received a cake for the prize.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the family of "PAPA" Pavlovic for their support in this event.

Christmas Dinner & Prize Giving 2006...

Most Outstanding member Award

Dec 23, 2006
"Christmas Dinner & Prize Giving Night" was held on Saturday December 23 at the Clubhouse.
Everyone was welcomed by a big new banner saying "Montego Bay Boys & Girl's Club Welcomes you to our Annual Christmas Dinner". There was also a sound system gBlack Pearl Soundh owned by Lala (Agate H.O.B.).

The menu of the night was Curried Goat, Jerked Chicken, Fried Chicken, Escovitch Fish, Rice & Peas, Plain Rice, Mashed Potato, Tossed Salad, Corn Salad, Potato Fries with Drinks like Cool Aid and Fruit Punch.

Dodo (Harrison H. O.B.), Pouse (Harrison H. O.B.), Big Hulk (Delisser H. O.B.) and Sonny (Agate H. O.B.) were the chefs in charge. They started the preparation from the day before so that they would have enough food to serve about 350 persons.

The main event of the night was the prize giving. A lot of trophies, cakes, and incentives were handed to the club members who worked so hard for their prizes. It was clear that those prizes made the children so proud of themselves and gave them a motivation to work harder the following year.

Special thanks for the following contributions:
** Big Banner from Steve Forrester
** Christmas tree, trophies, miscellaneous goods from Willo (Agate H. O.B.) & Keith (Harrison H. O.B.)

People behind the scene [Part 1: Willo & Keith]

Dec 23, 2006
Every year before Christmas, the club receives barrels containing full of goods, food, and trophies.
Trevor "Willo" Wilson (Agate H. O.B.) and Keith Young (Harrison H. O.B.) are the ones who have been sending those barrels for the club's annual Christmas Dinner & Prize Giving for the last 15 years.
"It is the generosity we have received from all of the people, especially 'PAPA' Pavlovic, POP & Mr. Earle. They have given up so much for nothing, just to help the club. This is the least we can do to show our appreciation. It is a Christmas gift from us." says Willo and Keith.

"We will continue to do our best we can. Thanks to the club's website! It made a lot of us get back in touch with each other who we haven't heard for 20 years! Our objective is to see club huge complex, so it can hold more children and have better club facility. We want the children to stay out of street, be good citizen, and disciplined. The club makes us feel home and of-course looking forward to be here for the next Christmas too!" says Willo.

The club salute to their continuous support, and would like to say a big thanks!

Report from Peace Boat & Sunholiday Joint Project...

- January 2, 2007 -
In July 2005, Peace Boat and Sunholiday Travel & Tours Ltd. got together and formed a Joint Project by organizing a Charity Reggae Event "Sun Bash" to raise funds for the community of Montego Bay.
Who got the first opportunity!? Well, Montego Bay Boys & Girls Club was the first fortunate one to be chosen to receive this benefit.

After having 3 Charity Reggae Events performed by Montego Bay's finest artistes like E.T.Webster, Djani, Audley Scott, and T. FRENZ, the fund reached J$1,000,000 which enabled to start the Project with 3 objectives for the club.

1) Establish ADSL internet connection
2) Create website for the club
3) Build extension and set-up computer rooms for IT education

In September 2005, ADSL internet connection was setup, and website was launched in December 2005. The project is now in the 3rd phase which is to build extension to setup computer rooms. Construction is going well so far. A lot of work to be done still but we know we will complete it one day, and that day will be pretty soon tooc

Full of surprises from 'PAPA' Pavlovic family...

December 21, 2006
O'Donnell family, the grandchildren of Papa & Branka Pavlovic visited Jamaica and the main purpose of their visit was to fulfill the wishes of their grandparents of one day returning to Jamaica they loved so much. It was to organize a private ceremony in Papa & Branka's honour, and rest their ashes in the waters of Jamaica.
During their stay, they visited the club with some surprises.
They brought nice reprinted pictures that were taken back in 1960fs. Jennifer (Papa's granddaughter) went downtown and walked in to a shop to get photos reprinted to a larger size for the club. The amazing thing was the man at the shop happened to be the cameraman who took those photos back in the 1960s. It was like Papa gave them a surprise too.
The family also made a donation of CA$5,000. This will be used to fix 'PAPA' Music Hall which received a major damage from Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

'Papa' was one of the most influential directors the Club had. His spirit is still alive today, and it will continue to live inside our soul. So Papa! Make sure you keep on watching us from "UP THERE"!!!

November 28, 2006
On the suggestion of His Worship the Mayor Councillor Noel Donaldson, the St. James Parish Council at its Regular Monthly Meeting held on November 9, 2006, approved of a donation of J$100,000 being granted to the Montego Bay Boys & Girls Club to assist with its activities.
The Council recognizes that the organization has been in operation for many years and has impacted positively on numerous lives since its inception.

Well, it is so nice not only to receive donation, but to be recognized for club's possitive impact on so many lives over the years! Nuff respect to Pop, Mr. Earle, and all the past directors!!!

December 21, 2006
Yes! It's that season again!!
'Christmas Carol Singing Competition' was held at the club on Thursday night.
Young House delivered another energetic and creative performance, and for Jones House, despite of only 4 participants they all did their best.
The judge (Carl 'Slouchy' Mathews) announced the winning song of 2006, and it went to "Silver Bell" by McAdam House. He commented that McAdam did a very good job putting creativity on their chorus, formation and performance.
Unfortunately last year's winner Agate House did not win this year but they surprised the crowd by taking off their shirts just before the competition began revealing their 'hand-made Agate House T-shirt'.
